HOUSTON – The top baseball team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Western Division pushed its winning streak to seven games as Texas Southern swept a doubleheader from the Prairie View A&M Panthers in front of an energetic home crowd.
Texas Southern (15-11, 9-2 SWAC) won Saturday’s opener by a score of 14-7 before winning the second game 16-4 to claim the series win over the Panthers.
In game one, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning of play and prevented a late rally attempt by the Panthers (7-17, 4-5 SWAC) to seal the contest.
Felix Gomez pitched six and one-thirds innings to pick up the win for the Tigers. PVAMU Starting pitcher Alberto Aveytia took the loss after giving up six earned runs over five innings.
The Tigers pounded out 16 hits in game one. Joel Rosario racked up three RBIs during game one and he stayed hot throughout the majority of the day at the plate.
In the second game, Texas Southern and Prairie View were tied after each of the first three innings, but TSU scored 15 consecutive runs between the third and sixth innings to capture a seven-inning win.
Frank Cruz pitched five innings for the Tigers to pick up the victory. Jordan Stewart absorbed the loss for the Panthers, giving up 10 earned runs over five innings.
The two teams conclude their series Sunday at MacGregor Park with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
