HOUSTON, Texas – Senior guard Kendra Coleman scored 22 points to led Southern to a 62-57 win over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday night at the Toyota Center.
It was a close game the entire first half. There was back and forth action between both teams. Mississippi Valley had the lead going into the locker rooms, 31-27. The second half would be much like the first. The Devilettes lead most of the game until the last few minutes of the second half.
With 3:22 remaining in the game, MVSU led the way by four points. All-Conference, first team guard, Kendra Coleman connected on a short jumper just a little under 2:00 minutes to cut the lead to two points.
Kadesha Floyd came back down and hit a jumper behind the arc to push the led to 54-49. Coleman got hot and couldn’t be stopped. The Jaguars would claim a five point victory.
Britney Washington scored 15 for Southern University and Cortnei Purnell added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. The Devilettes were led by Ashley Beals who scored a team-high and recorded a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
“We need to get back to what we do,” Southern head coach Sandy Pugh said. “I’m just excited to have our full complement back and we can just get back to basketball. “Prior to this, we were playing really well – our timing, our intensity and our focus. With this little hiccup behind us, we are going to come in and be ready go.”
