NORFOLK, Va. – Despite a late push from Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton pulled off the quarterfinal upset on Thursday evening at the Norfolk Scope Arena, taking the 76-71 win.
The Pirates (14-17) advance to Friday’s semifinal against rival Norfolk State at 8 p.m.
Deron Powers led four Pirates in double figures with 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Reginald Johnson added 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and grabbing nine rebounds.
Brian Darden and Jervon Pressley each poured in 12 points.
Charles Wilson-Fisher came off the bench to grab a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Pirates shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor and went 12-for-25 (48 percent) from behind the arc. Hampton also held a 45-37 edge in rebounds and scored 26 second-chance points – compared to just 11 for UMES.
UMES (16-16) shot 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the floor. Ishaq Pitt led three Hawks in double figures with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Mark Blackmon added 14 points and Dominique Elliott chipped in 12 points.
