Prairie View Keeps Southern Winless With 9-2 Blowout

JACKSON STATE def. ALCORN STATE, 21-3

LORMAN, Miss. – Jackson State University and Alcorn State University split their doubleheader Saturday to open conference play.

Alcorn took the conference home opener 9-8, but Jackson State rallied and routed the Braves 21-3 in the nightcap.

The road win put the Tigers at 4-5 overall, 1-1 SWAC. Alcorn State moved to 4-6, 1-1 SWAC.

JSU’s 21 runs, the most scored by any SWAC team this season, were from 17 hits and capitalizing off nine Alcorn State errors.

They were led offensively by Jonah Hargroves.

He hit .667 on the day with five runs and five RBI. Alcorn State was led by Earl Burl II and Collin Carroll.

The pair each hit .500, combining for seven hits and four runs.

Colton Laird earned Alcorn State’s win after giving up only three earned runs and striking out five in a full nine innings.

JSU’s Jevon Jacobs pitched a complete game striking out 11 of the 28 batters he faced and giving up just one walk.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M def. SOUTHERN

BATON ROUGE, La. – Prairie View A&M University improved to 4-5, 2-0 SWAC with its 9-2 win against Southern University Saturday at Lee-Hines Field.

Southern dropped to 0-5, 0-2 SWAC with the loss. Walter Wells led the Panthers, going 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI.

PVAMU’s Jordan Stewart moved to 2-1 on the year after earning the complete game win. He struck out a game-high six batters.

ALABAMA STATE def. Citadel, 15-14

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A rally in the top of the ninth inning propelled Alabama State University to its 15-14 win over Citadel Saturday at Riley Park.

ASU is now 4-5 overall. Six Hornets had multi-hit days.

PJ Biocic, Yamil Pagan, and Joseph Estrada earned three runs each.

And Waldyvan Estrada led with a game-high four RBI. Both teams went deep into their bullpens, combining for 12 different pitchers on the mound.

Michael Estevez picked up the win for ASU after pitching two innings and striking out over half of the batters he faced.

Armando Ruiz came in to close and picked up his second save of the season.

ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF def. TEXAS SOUTHERN, 12-4

HOUSTON, Texas – University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff picked up its third win of the season Saturday in a 12-4 decision over conference rival Texas Southern University.

UAPB is now 3-6 overall, 2-1 in SWAC play. Texas Southern dropped to 5-6, 1-2 SWAC with the loss.

UAPB was led by Chris Burns. The designated hitter was .500 on the day with five RBI, two doubles and one run. Blake Estep earned the win.

He went 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking only one batter.
