Alabama State Surges Past In-State Rival Alabama A&M

NORMAL, Ala. — Jamel Waters scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and collected eight steals as Alabama State held off Alabama A&M 59-56 on Saturday night.

Marcus Merriweather drilled a three pointer with 1:08 left to pull the Bulldogs within a point, 57-56, but Waters collected his eighth steal and fed Bobby Brown, who closed the game out on a dunk with ten seconds left for the Hornets.

Waters was 9 of 17 from the field and dished our five assists as ASU (9-5, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in conference play.

Wendell Lewis finished with 11 points and Brown added 10 for the visiting Hornets.

Ladarius Tabb scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, six off the offensive glass, to lead the AAMU (4-11, 3-2). Merriweather added 10 points.

Alabama A&M was hampered by 21 turnovers while Alabama State collected a total of 13 steals.
Alcorn State def Mississippi Valley State 87-67

LORMAN, Miss. — Leantwan Luckett scored 20 points and led five players into double figure scoring as Alcorn State shot its way past Mississippi Valley State, 87-67 on Saturday.

The Braves (4-13, 3-2) built a seven-point lead in the first half and expanded it by shooting 57. 4 percent from the field, including 8 of 18 from distance (44.4 percent), and converting 17 of 23 (73.9 percent) from the free-throw line.

Luckett made 6 of 13 from the field and knocked down 2 of his 5 three point attempts while pulling down five rebounds, dishing off five assists and collecting three steals.

Tyrel Hunt and Marquis Vance each contributed 15 points, Devonte Hampton had 13 points and Keynan Pittman added 10.

DeAngelo Priar had 20 points to lead Mississippi Valley State (2-15, 1-3), with Jeffrey Simmons adding another 12.

The Delta Devils shot 39.1 percent from the field (27 of 69).

Southern def Arkansas Pine Bluff 70-60

BATON ROUGE, La. — Frank Snow finished with 17 points and five blocks, Joell Hopkins added 12 points and Southern pushed past Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a 70-60 victory on Saturday night.

Adrian Rodgers chipped in 11 points and Jared Sam had 10 for the Jaguars (7-12, 4-1) who shot 50 percent from the field.

Keith Davis scored all seven of his points as Southern closed the first half on an 18-7 run to lead 42-30 at halftime.

UAPB pulled within five late in the second half, but a layup from Rodgers and six straight free throws from Sam made it 65-52 with four minutes left.

Prairie View def Jackson State 70-55

Prairie View, Texas — Montrael Scott scored 15 points to lead Prairie View A&M to its fourth-straight win over Jackson State, 70-55, on Saturday.

Jayrn Johnson added 11 points for Prairie View (3-14, 1-3), while Tre Hagood and Jacoby Green scored 10 apiece. Hagood also had eight assists.

A pair of free throws by Raeford Worsham with 4:42 left in the first half pulled Jackson State (4-14, 2-3) within five, but a jumper by Scott and a dunk by Johnson sparked a 12-1 run and gave the Panthers a 36-20 lead.

The Panthers made 23 of 49 (46.9 percent) field goals, including 8 of 16 from three point range, while the Tigers shot just 32.8 percent and 2 of 18 (11.1 percent) from deep.
