Virginia State left the Shaw in the dust with a 84-62 win Monday.
VSU is currently has a 10-2 overall record, 2-0 in the conference.
VSU shot 49.3 percent (34-69) from the field, 36.4 percent (8-10) from behind the arc and 80.0 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.
Senior Jessica Lyons took the lead for Trojans with 24 points while collecting 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Securing her 9th double-double of the season was senior Tiffanie Adair with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Cana Marriott added 17 points and 5 rebounds while senior Da’Shae Jones secured 15 points and 7 rebounds.
In the first half, the Trojans pulled ahead with 12 minutes on the clock with a 3 pointer from Lyons, bringing the score to 14-9. VSU played the court, gaining the defensive advantage over the Lady Bears.
The crowd went wild as Jones and Adair made a great play for a basket followed by Lyons with a shot from behind the arc.
An over the back shot by Jones give the Trojans a score of 31-22 with 1:11 left in the half. The final score of the half left the Trojans in the lead 31-24.
The Lady Bears attempted to close the scoring gap early on the second half until Marriott made a solid shot from behind the arc. Marriott then came through recovering the Lady Bears turnover followed by Lyons with a three pointer.
The Trojan Nation stood to their feet as Jones sunk back to back shots from behind the arc bringing the score 60-43. Lyons tipped in a basket with the help a Lady Bear with 6:30 left in regulation. The Trojans finished strong with a final score 84-62
VSU blew pass the Lady Bears with 20 points off turnovers.
