NEW ORLEANS, La. – Grambling State University and Southern University set a Bayou Classic scoring record Saturday as the teams battled it out for the Southwestern Athletic Conference western division title and a trip to the 2014 Toyota SWAC football championship.
Grambling (7-5, 7-2 SWAC) fought back to within seven points down the stretch, but Southern (9-3, 8-1 SWAC) held on for the 54-45 win and its second consecutive divisional championship.
The Tigers pushed deep into Southern territory with under a minute to play.
Quarterback Johnathan Williams ran the ball to the one yard line on fourth down with 12 seconds remaining to keep Grambling’s drive alive and set up one more goal line play.
After a Southern timeout, with nine seconds on the clock, Grambling attempted a QB sneak to push the ball over the line and the Jaguar front line came up with a huge stop.
They denied the Tigers with inches to go and time expiring.
