Major losses causes shakeup in BOXTOROW Polls
A&T remains No. 1 and controls is destiny
Boxtorow.com
There were quite a few losses amongst the top 10 teams in the BOXTOROW Coaches and Media Polls which made for major shifts in the polls.
North Carolina A&T and Alcorn State both won and remained 1 and 2 in the coaches poll. With South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman and Grambling losing, Southern moved up three spots to No. 3.
Despite losing to Hampton 40-35 in perhaps the weekend’s biggest upset, B-CU was the only team that did not drop in the poll, remaining No. 4. South Carolina State’s loss to Morgan State dropped them two spots to No. 5.
B-CU and SCSU losses have created some potential chaos in the MEAC. Grambling’s loss to Alabama State snapped its seven-game winning streak and dropped the Tigers three spots to No. 7.
In the media poll, Virginia State’s 21-17 victory over Winston-Salem State in the CIAA championship game gave them a significant boost in the poll, moving up six spots to No. 4. This is the highest ranking ever in the poll for the Trojans. Southern also made a significant leap, moving up four spots to No. 3.
Alcorn State received three first place votes – compared to one last week – and closed its deficit slightly with No. 1 North Carolina A&T, the Aggies fourth week in the top spot.
North Carolina A&T controls its own destiny and can win the MEAC championship outright if they defeat arch-rival North Carolina Central Saturday on the road in Durham. If not, they will at the very least share the crown with NCCU and possibly Bethune-Cookman, South Carolina State and Morgan State if all three of those teams win.
Meanwhile the NCAA Division II Playoffs begin Saturday. Virginia State will play at LIU Post and Tuskegee will play at West Georgia.
The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches and media polls are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. The coaches poll is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
