Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

New Orleans, La. (GCAConf.com) – Xavier University junior guard Morris Wright has been named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 10-16.  This is his first GCAC Player of the Week honor.

The native of Zachary, La. helped the thirteenth ranked Gold Rush to a pair of wins over Loyola (La.) and Wiley.  The 5-10 guard led Xavier in scoring, assists and 3-pointers made during the week.  His 24 points in the win over Wiley are a season-high.  For the week Wright averaged 18 points, 4 assists and 2.5 rebounds.  He went 6-14 from behind the three point line.

Aquil Baynard scored 22 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Philander Smith in an 83-80 loss to John Brown (Ark.)…Shai Fields averaged 26 points in two games for Talladega, including an 83-66 road win over Pensacola Christian on 65 percent shooting including 9-14 from three-point range…Tougaloo’s Trevis Thomas posted 25 points in a road loss to Belhaven…Dillard’s Patrick Thompson helped the Bleu Devils snap a 20-game losing streak by scoring 11 points to go along with 6 boards and 2 steals in his first career start.

Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

New Orleans, La. (GCAConf.com) – Southern University at New Orleans senior forward Brandy Broome has been named the GCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played from Nov. 10-16.  This is her second consecutive Player of the Week Award this season.

Broome averaged 23 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals for the Lady Knights as SUNO went 1-1 on the week.  The native of Natchitoches, La. continues to show her versatility and ability to impact the game on both ends of the court for SUNO.  Her 26 points against No. 11 Loyola (La.) were just two off of her career high.

Tougaloo’s Montoria Atkinson averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in a pair of losses…Alena Evans posted 16 points and 9 rebounds for Dillard in a 62-57 loss to Wiley College…Xavier’s Whitney Gathright averaged 15 points, 6 boards and 5 assists during a 2-1 week for the Gold Nuggets that included a win over No. 22 Mobile…Caryan Jones of Philander Smith scored 18 points in a road loss at Central Baptist (Ark.)…Voorhees’ Kritofia Smart had 18 points and 8 rebounds in a home win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.)
