BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Prairie View A&M University and newly crowned eastern division champion Alcorn State University dominated the Southwestern Athletic Conference football student-athlete of the week awards. Johntá Hebert, Jr. (Baton Rouge, La./Glen Oaks) and Jerome Howard, Sr. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation) of PVAMU were named offensive and co-defensive student-athletes of the week. Alcorn State’s Desmond Stevenson (Memphis, Tenn./Wooddale) and Haiden McCraney (Jackson, Miss./Madison-Ridgeland Academy) earned co-defensive and specialist of the week honors, respectively. Quantavius Peterson (Shelby, Miss.) of Mississippi Valley State University rounded out the winners as newcomer of the week.
Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week: Johntá Hebert, Jr. (Prairie View)
Hebert finished with three touchdowns as PVAMU defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 51-23 on Saturday. He rushed for 122 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown and caught three passes for 39 yards. Hebert finished with 214 all-purpose yards after tacking on 53 more yards off kick returns.
Co-Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week: Jerome Howard, Sr. (Prairie View) and Desmond Stevenson (Alcorn State)
Howard tied for the team-high with 11 tackles along with two sacks and a 57-yard fumble return. Stevenson recorded a career-high 13 total tackles, eight solo, and two sacks to lead the Braves’ defense in their 41-14 victory over Alabama A&M University.
Specialist of the Week: Haiden McCraney (Alcorn State)
McCraney averaged 44.9 yards per punt on 10 attempts with his longest going 65 yards in the Braves win. He also placed three of those punts inside the 20 yard line.
Newcomer of the Week: Quantavius Peterson (Mississippi Valley State)
Peterson earned three touchdowns, two rushing and one passing, while completing 17-of-23 passes for 138 yards. He also rushed for a game-high 81 yards.
