BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference released its week nine football student-athletes of the week Monday. All four helped lead their teams to wins over the weekend. Alcorn State’s John Gibbs, Jr. (Houston, Texas/Booker T. Washington) and Arron Baker (Belle Glades, Fla./Belle Glades) were named offensive athlete and newcomer of the week. Willie Duncan (Southfield, Mich.) of Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned defensive student-athlete of the week honors, and Southern’s Willie Quinn (Miami, Fla./Miami-Jackson) was named specialist of the week, respectively.
Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week: John Gibbs, Jr. (Alcorn State)
Gibbs completed 18-of-27 passes for a career-high 362 yards and four touchdowns in the Braves 77-48 victory over Prairie View. He also rushed for 32 yards on nine carries and scored one touchdown. His longest pass was for 83 yards.
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week: Willie Duncan (Arkansas-Pine Bluff)
Duncan earned 11 total tackles, 10 solo, in the Golden Lions 38-37 win over Texas Southern. He also had one sack and two tackles for a loss.
Specialist of the Week: Willie Quinn (Southern)
Quinn recorded 242 all-purpose yards and his first punt return touchdown of the season on an 81-yard return in the first quarter of Southern’s 42-28 win over Jackson State Saturday. He finished with five catches for 134 yards and 25 kickoff yards.
Newcomer of the Week: Arron Baker (Alcorn State)
Baker earned a career-high 149 yards on 15 carries and scored a career-high three touchdowns in the Braves 77-48 win over Prairie View. He averaged 9.9 yards per carry and his longest run was for 31 yards. Each of his touches were for positive yardage.
