GRAMBLING, La. – In their second homecoming game of the season, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff scored 30-plus points for the second straight game as Grambling State defeated the Golden Lions, 63-39 here Saturday afternoon at Eddie Robinson Stadium.
UAPB quarterback proved that he is still one of the premier quarterbacks in the conference as he finished the game with 467 yards through the air by completing 27 passes in 50 attempts with two TDs and two interceptions and rushed for 66 yards on 28 carries and scoring two TDs to finish the game with 533 yards of total offense.
Marvante King continues to improved week in and week out for the Golden Lions as he led the UAPB receivers in receiving yards with 182 yards on six receptions with one TD and his longest reception being for 78 yards.
Jared Turner led the UAPB defense with six tackles and one tackles for loss.
UAPB grabbed an early 3-0 lead on a Tyler Strickland 31-yard field goal with 4:48 left in the first, capping a 10-play, 66-yard drive by the Golden Lions.
GSU responded as the scored on a Johnathan Williams 73-yard TD pass to Verlon Hunter with 6:32 left in the first.
The Tigers went up 14-3 on a Randolph Giovanni 21-yard fumble recovery with 12:28 to go in the second.
UAPB made the score14-10 on an Anderson eight-yard TD pass to Willie Young at the 8:48 mark of the second quarter, capping an eight-play, 78-yard drive by the Golden Lions.
Williams passed for two TDs in the second quarter for GSU as he connect with Chester Rogers from 44 yards out and Hunter from 38 yards out to take a 28-10 lead.
UAPB closed out the first half on a one-yard TD run by Anderson with nine seconds left in the second as the Golden Lions would go into the break trailing the Tigers 28-18, after the UAPB two-point conversion by Anderson.
GSU scored five TDs in the third quarter to take 56-25 lead into the four quarter as UAPB scored one TD in the quarter on a 78-yard TD to King from Anderson with 4:17 left in the third quarter.
The Golden Lions scored twice in the fourth quarter on an Aaron LaGrone four-yard TD run with 13:48 to go in the fourth and again with at the 4:18 mark on an Anderson four-yard run, while GSU scored their only TD of the fourth on a Juwan Martin five-yard run with10:49 to go in the fourth for the 63-39 finale.
Williams led the Tigers’ ground attack as he rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries and scoring two TDs, while passing for 377 yards by completing 19 passes in 27 attempts and throwing three TDs with his longest pass being for 73 yards, to finish the contest with 429 yards of total offense.
Aaron Breed led the GSU defense with 11 tackles (9 solos, 2 Asst), 1.0 sack and one tackle for loss for six yards.
With the win, Grambling State remains the only unbeaten team in conference play as they move to 5-3 and 5-0 in conference, whereas UAPB goes to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
