The MEAC and the city of Norfolk, Va., announced Thursday that the league basketball tournament will remain in the city through 2018.
“It’s substantial,” Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim said. “There are thousands of visitors who come and enjoy Norfolk and everything that we have to offer, as well as attending the tournament.”
In March, the MEAC tournament drew 41,182, up from 32,312 who attended in 2013.
The tournament was held in Winston-Salem, N.C., prior to moving to Norfolk.
Next March will mark the end of a three-year deal between the city and the league. City and MEAC officials have expressed their satisfaction with the economic impact the tournament has on the downtown area, especially for hotels and restaurants.
“We are elated to extend this great partnership for another three years,” Thomas said.
