No one was injured when a university bus carrying the Jackson State baseball team caught fire Monday afternoon in Alabama.
According to school officials, the bus was transporting the team to Savannah, Ga., ahead of a Tuesday game versus Savannah State when it caught fire on I-20 about 15 miles west of Birmingham.
All players, coaches and staff members exited the bus before it became engulfed in flames.
“The bus is gone,” Jackson State assistant coach Chris Stamps told USA TODAY Sports. “We’re all OK. We lost all our equipment, though.”
The game has been cancelled, officials said.
“We are relieved that everyone is safe. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers said in a statement. “The university will conduct its own exhaustive investigation into this unfortunate incident.”
