The first marquee matchup of the season takes place tonight when Southern battles Alabama State for first place in the conference.

Southern (10-10, 6-1), led by team leading scorer and rebounder forward Calvin Godfrey, won a hard-fought contest over Alabama A&M 66-52 on Saturday.

The defending SWAC champions have won five out of their leas six games since Jan. 6.

Alabama State (11-6, 5-1) is coming off a close 58-54 win at Alcorn State. They have won four consecutive games, including an impressive 31-point victory at home against Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 11.

Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m.

SWAC MEN’S BASKETBALL STOCK REPORT

1. Southern
The Jaguars host Alabama State in game with first place in the league at stake.

2. Alabama State
The hottest team in conference having won four straight contests.

3. Texas Southern
The Tigers have cooled off since their impressive early season start, but Aaric Murray is still going strong averaging 23 points and eight rebounds per game.

4. Praire View
Even though the Panthers are under .500 overall, they’ve won three straight and sit at 4-2 in conference play.

5. Alcorn
The Braves find themselves just one game out of first place entering Monday.

6. Alabama A&M
Is there anyone more valuable to his team than Jeremy Crutcher?

7. Jackson State
The Tigers have been inconsistent in stretches this season, but have won their last two.

8. Arkansas Pine-Bluff
Ten games under break even, and now the Golden Lions have lost their last four after begining SWAC play 2-0.

9. Mississppi Valley State
The Delta Devils have only lost by fewer than double-digits once since Decemeber.

10. Grambing State
Still looking for their first SWAC win of the season.

Player of the Week

Montrael Scott scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Prairie View A&M to a 71-62 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday night. He has averaged 20.3 points per game in the Panthers last three wins.
