It was the preseason SWAC player of the year against the best individual player through the first two months of the regular season Monday night.In a back-and-forth and game that was not decided until the final minutes, Southern’s Calvin Godfrey poured in 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Jaguars over Texas Southern 79-71.
Godfrey, a junior college transfer who led preseason conference player of the year honors, made 13 of his 19 field goal attempts to stave off a second half surge by Texas Southern center Aaric Murray, who posted 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists.Southern improved to 2-0 in the SWAC while Texas Southern dropped to 1-1 in league play.
