NEW ORLEANS, La. — Southern University capped the regular season with a 40-17 victory over in-state rivals, Grambling State, on Saturday in the 40th Annual Bayou Classic inside the Mercedes Benz Superdome.
Dray Joseph and Lee Doss connected for three touchdowns to help SU (8-4, 7-2) gain 405 yards of total offense.
The Jaguars jumped out to a 27-3 halftime lead on a short scoring run by Lenard Tillery with touchdown receptions 17 and 30 yards by Doss.
Doss finished with six catches for 117 yards and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Tillery gained 104 yards on 19 carries (5.5 avg). Joseph finished 15-of-26 for 226 yards and an interception to go with his three touchdown passes.
GSU (1-10, 1-8) pulled into the lead, 27-17, on Johnathan Williams’ touchdown passes of 11 yards to Robert Bailey and eight yards to Anthony McGhee.
In the fourth quarter, SU’s defense stifled the Tigers’ comeback attempt by forcing turnovers.Virgil Williams recorded and Daniel Brown forced a fumble on a sack. Anthony Balancier led the Jaguars with nine tackles including eight solo.
GSU finished with 312 yards of offense with Williams throwing 14-of-21 with two interceptions and a pair of touchdowns for 128 passing yards. Anthony McGhee and Reginald Bailey were on the receiving end of Williams’ touchdown passes.
Aaron Breed spotlighted the Tigers on defense with nine tackles.
