HOUSTON, Texas – Jackson State University claimed the 2013 Southwest Athletic Confernce Soccer Tournament Championship with a 1-0 win over Alabama State on Sunday at Houston Amateur Sports Park.
Taylor Emerson (7-1-1) finished with three saves posting her third consecutive shutout for the tournament. She was named MVP finishing the three-game span with 12 saves.
Sie’Yara Wells scored the game winning goal during the 56th minute to hand JSU (10-9-2) its second championship in program history. The last time JSU won the SWAC title was in 2010.
Well and Emerson join teammates Kimberlie Hernandez, Alexandra Gautier, and Jalana Ellis on the all-tournament team. The Lady Tigers posted 11 shots including six on goal while tallying 11 corner kicks.
In its first appearance in the championship game, ASU (14-7) collected seven shots with three on goal. Kylee Hathaway (14-6-0) was charged with the loss for the Lady Hornets recording five saves for the game.
Jackson State earns the SWAC automatic bid and will face an opponent to-be-announced during the NCAA Women’s Soccer Selection Show. The show will air live on NCAA.com on Monday, November 11, at 3:30 pm CT.
