PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Alabama State University junior running back Isaiah Crowell has been named to the 2013 Walter Payton Award Watch List. This is the 27th year for the annual award which is presented by The Sports Network to the outstanding player in the Football Championship Series (FCS).
Crowell was named to the list along with two other players this week and that list now includes 20 players.
The Columbus, Ga., native has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the past four games. He is averaging 139 yards rushing per game, which leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and is fifth in the FCS.
He has rushed for a total of 696 yards on 91 carries over the first five games of the season. Crowell averages 7.6 yards per carry and has rushed for nine touchdowns, including a career-high four in ASU’s 49-30 win over Alcorn State this past weekend.
A national panel of broadcasters, media relations directors, sports information directors, writers and other selected votes will be sent ballots following the season. The top three vote-getters will be invited to The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.
The Walter Payton Award is not the only award The Sports Network sponsors. Other awards are the Buck Buchanan (outstanding defensive player), Jerry Rice (FCS Freshman of the Year) and Eddie Robinson (FCS Coach of the Year) awards.
