JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State University scored 28-unanswered points to defeat Texas Southern 35-7 on Thursday evening live on ESPNU at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
JSU (2-2, 2-0) picked up the Southwestern Athletic Conference victory to remain unbeaten in league play.
The Tigers led 14-7 at the break after Javancy Jones recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 23 seconds left in the second quarter. JSU held TSU (0-3, 0-2) to 38 rushing yards as Jones led the defense with seven tackles including two of the Tigers six sacks on night.
Rakeem Sims scored two touchdowns in the third quarter finishing the game with 37 yards on the ground. Clayton Moore fueled JSU’s offense throwing 8-of-16 for 81 yards while rushing for 86 yards, on 14 carries, for a 6.1 average and score. Moore accounted for 167 of the team’s 295 yards as JSU finished with 214 yards on the ground.
Tommy Gooden tied a game-high with four receptions for 22 yards. Stedmon Capler capped the scoring for JSU with a two-yard run at the 10:30 mark in the fourth quarter.
Daveon Porter posted TSU’s only touchdown of the night with a two-yard scoring run in the second quarter. He finished with 30 yards on 13 carries. Jamal Small completed 6-of-11 for 90 yards. Fred Plummer tacked on four receptions for 47 yards.
Michael Holmes led the TSU Tigers with nine tackles and Remond Silas picked up a sack.
