NEW ORLEANS – The Grambling State Tigers claimed their fifth straight conference title on Sunday at the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium. GSU scored 146 points to earn their 9th title overall, earning Bertram Lovell Coach of the Year honors.
Prairie View A&M finished the meet second with 130 points, while Mississippi Valley State was third with 117 points. Southern was fourth with 113 points and Texas Southern rounded out the top five with 94 points. Alabama State was sixth (89 pts), Jackson State seventh (59 pts), Alabama A&M eighth (31 pts), Alcorn State ninth (21 pts) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 10th with 16 points.
Individually, D’Wayne Houston of Southern was the championship Most Outstanding Field Performer scoring 26 points. Houston won both the Hammer Throw and Shot Put, while finishing third in the Discus Throw (6).
Meanwhile Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley State was the meet Most Outstanding Runner, sweeping all of the distance events, 1500m, 5000m and 10000 to pile up 30 points.
