NEW ORLEANS – Alabama State University outran Prairie View A&M to their eighth SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. It’s four straight for the Lady Hornets who came from behind to capture the title. The Lady Hornets scored 196.5 points, finishing just ahead of second place Prairie View who finished the meet with 183.33 points.
Mississippi Valley State was a distant third with 101.33 points, while Southern and Texas Southern were fourth and fifth with 74 and 73.5 points respectively. Jackson State scored 52 points to finish sixth. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was seventh with 45, Alcorn State eighth with 32.33, Alabama A&M ninth with 32 and Grambling 10th with 28 points.
Individually, Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff earned Most Outstanding Track Performer honors. She won the 800m, 1,500m and 5000m races, rolling up 30 points. In the 5000m, she set a new SWAC record with a blazing finishing time of 17:50.38. She eclipsed the old record of 18:02.24 by 12 seconds.
Tambriya Barney of Mississippi Valley State claimed the Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades, finishing with 20 points. She took first place in the Long Jump (10) and Triple Jump (10).
