GARLAND, Texas – No. 3 seeded Mississippi Valley State University held off No. 6 seed Alabama A&M to claim a 63-60 win on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament.Lenise Stallings led MVSU (16-14) with 17 points going 3-for-6 from the floor and hitting all eight attempts at the free-throw line.
A’Shanti Weathers recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Jasmyne Sanders chipped in 13 points and Joncyee Sanders registered game-highs with 11 boards and nine assists.
For AAMU, Brittney Strickland led all players with 20 points from 6-of-11 shooting. Jasmine Sanders followed with 11 points and eight boards.
After leading 30-26 at halftime, MVSU grasped a 57-49 advantage with 1:42 left in the game.
AAMU hit six consecutive free throws, including two from Strickland. On the Lady Bulldogs ensuing possession, Strickland connected a three-point basket before Shundray Davis hit a pair from the line to shrink the Devilettes’ lead, 57-54, with under a minute remaining.
However, with under 30 seconds left, Stallings hit four free throws to secure the win for MVSU.
