Houston -The Texas Southern Tigers football program welcomed Michael Vite to its coaching staff. Vite is the Tigers’ new defensive coordinator. He spent the last four years as head coach at the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va., a Division III program.
Vite has extensive experience as a defensive coordinator at all levels of college football, including Gilford College, Morgan State, Southern Illinois and Southern University. His defenses ranked among the best in the nation, and he expects to have the same success at Texas Southern.
“I am excited to join Coach [Darrell] Asberry at Texas Southern,” said Vite. “I am impressed with the way the kids work, but we still have a long way to go.”
“First, I want to thank Coach [Greg] Johnson for stepping in to lead a defense that was out of sync last season. I really appreciate his dedication and efforts,” Asberry said.
Asberry says he’s wanted Coach Vite on his staff for the past two or three years.
“Coach Vite brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to TSU and I’m very familiar with his system,” Asberry said. “His presence will allow me to focus on the offense because I know the kids will be taught right and treated fairly.”
Under Vite’s leadership, Asberry says expects the Tigers defense to be 10 times better than last year.
