MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University/American Lube Fast Coaches Caravan will roll through Georgia and Alabama beginning Saturday, July 28.

The caravan, aimed at promoting ASU Athletics, will make stops in four cities beginning tomorrow through July 31. The tour will make stops Saturday in Columbus, Ga. and Atlanta, Ga.  Monday, the tour heads to Mobile and will conclude Tuesday in Montgomery.

ASU athletic director Stacy Danley, head football coach Reggie Barlow and head men’s basketball coach Lewis Jackson will lead the Tour Team.

The ASU/American Lube Fast Coaches Caravan will reflect on the 2011-12 athletic year and look ahead to the upcoming season for Alabama State University, highlighted by the opening of new 26,500-seat on-campus ASU Football Stadium on Thanksgiving Day.

This past season was another stellar one for ASU athletics, which for the second consecutive year finished second in the Commissioners Cup standings for Best Overall Program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Alabama State won four SWAC championships, including the triple crown titles of ASU Women’s Track (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track), as well as the first SWAC championship and NCAA appearance by the men’s golf program. The football team posted its highest win total since 2004 and was the top-ranked team in Black College Football most of the season.

The on-field success began in the classroom, as more than 90 student athletes were named to the SWAC All-Academic Team (cumulative GPA 3.0 or above). During the past season, more than 130 athletes earned at least 3.0 GPAs in the fall, and more than 120 during the spring semester. Of that total, at least 20 student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs each semester.
