CYPRESS, Texas – The two-time defending SWAC Tournament Champion Prairie View A&M women’s basketball team will travel to the East Coast and play No. 1 seed Connecticut at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament’s Kingston Region in Bridgeport, Conn.
Prairie View A&M (17-15), the 16th seed, hosted a watch party at the Buffalo Wild Wings Bar & Grill on Monday located on 25704 Highway 290 in Cypress after closing out the season with six consecutive wins and their fourth SWAC Tournament Championship in six years.
Lady Panthers’ second-year head coach Toyelle Wilson will direct Prairie View A&M in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years. That feat has never been accomplished in school history. She has also tied former coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke for the most NCAA Tournament appearances in program history with two. Saturday’s game will also mark the sixth consecutive postseason bid for PV since 2007.
The Lady Panthers are up to the challenge of trying to upset a 29-4 Connecticut team at the No. 1 seed. UConn, coached by Geno Auriemma, has made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances and has seven national titles under its belt. The Huskies are 1-0 all-time versus SWAC schools with their lone matchup versus Southern in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
Saturday’s game will be televised live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com with KPVU 91.3 serving as the radio home once again with a 12:10 p.m. pregame show.
