Call me crazy, but Sean Woods should be given serious consideration for Coach of the Year.

That’s right, the best college basketball coach in all the land might reside at Mississippi Valley State and not at Big Ten powerhouses Michigan State, Ohio State or surprising Murray State of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Never mind MVSU has an RPI of 152, a strength of schedule of 298 and hasn’t beaten a single top 25 school.

The Delta Devils basketball program shouldn’t be judged by the standards of BCS conferences, considering the Southwestern Athletic Conference school is at a tremendous disadvantage comparatively.

The elite or even high mid-major programs are not forced to spend the first month of the regular season on the road versus the likes of North Carolina, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Florida in an effort to supplement the university’s coffers. Mississippi Valley State’s basketball budget is $350,000. Kentucky, ranked No. 1 in the country, has a budget of $10 million.

Combined with spending a significant amount of time not coaching while tending to other responsibilities, makes Woods job one of the toughest in all Division 1.
