MVSU falls short in 11-inning battle
The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devil baseball team fought hard, but loss in the first elimination contest of the 2011 SWAC Baseball Tournament in Shreveport, Louisiana.
MVSU got on the scoreboard first in the fourth inning when Kylie Ming scored on a fielder’s choice by Derek Wallace.
After surrendering four runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Devils would fight back, scoring four in the bottom of the frame. After a Kylie Ming single and a Michael Lowe, Scott Hornstra homered to left field to make the score 4-4. After two flyouts, Jon Neuberger reached on an error before a Chris Norman double to left field would score Neuberger to give MVSU a 5-4 lead.
Texas Southern would tie the game in the top of the eighth inning on a Frankie Rivera sacrifice fly to score Lacy Jackson.
In the top of the 11th inning, Texas Southern would get a run on a Cameron Logan RBI double to get the win.
Texas Southern’s Bryan Smith worked 4 1/3 innings in relief for the win while Kelvin Schulba earned his first save of the year. MVSU’s Eric Dowell was credited with the loss.
With the decision, MVSU ends its season with a 18-36 overall record, and a 14-9 conference mark.
