HOUSTON – Seventeen Texas Southern University student-athletes, representing seven teams, are scheduled to receive their academic degrees during graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 14 at the Health and Physical Education Arena.
Leading the way is the Tiger football program with eight graduates. Men’s basketball followed with four and baseball, women’s basketball, women’s bowling, women’s soccer and women track and field round out the list with one each.
Heading the list of student-athlete graduates is the 2011 SWAC bowling player of the year, Chantel Jefferson. Jefferson will graduate with Cum Laude honors in Human Performance.
Football’s list of graduates include SBN All-Americans Dejuan Fulghum (2010) and William Osborne (2008). Fulghum was the 2010 SWAC defensive player of the year and the 2010 SWAC Championship game Defensive MVP. Osborne, a two-time all-conference receiver/return specialist, completed his degree requirements in December but did not participate in fall commencement ceremonies because of conflicting dates with the SWAC championship game.
Also among the graduates from men’s basketball is Travele Jones. Jones was the 2011 SWAC player of the year and finished the year as the leading scorer in the conference. He recently received the Paul Robeson Student Athlete/Scholar Award from the University Museum for his leadership and community service.
“We are extremely proud of these student-athletes,” said TSU athletics director Charles McClelland. “This is a special time for these students; it’s a testament of their dedication and hard work.
“Receiving their degrees is one of those ultimate accomplishments for them. They have exemplified our mission in the classroom and on the playing field. I want to personally commend each of them on their achievement and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”
