ALEXANDRIA, La. – With winds gusting to near 40 miles per hour at Links on the Bayou Golf Course, Alabama State freshman Amelie Buhl was as steady as a seasoned veteran and led the Hornets to their first Southwestern Athletic Conference title in women’s golf.
Buhl was the only player to break 40 on the back nine, firing an even-par 36 to distance herself and the Hornets from Jackson State, which finished six shots behind Alabama State. Buhl capped the championship with a dramatic 30-foot par putt on the final hole to seal the victory. She won the individual title by seven shots over teammate Aileen Meredith.
Jackson State opened the day with a one-shot lead over Alabama State in defense of the Tigers’ 2010 title. Defending medalist Jennifer Sells finished fifth overall in defense of her medalist title.
