ITTA BENA, Mississippi — The Mississippi Valley State Devilette softball team a sweep over the visiting Alabama State Lady Hornets Saturday afternoon at MVSU’s Devilette Softball Field.
The series sweep gives the Devilettes the SWAC Eastern Division title for the 2011 season.
Game one saw the Devilettes blank the Lady Hornets 9-0 powered by the bat of catcher Nicole Burr, who went 2-for-3 with five runs batted in. Burr capped the game with a three-run blast in the third inning.
Joining Burr in the home run fest was shortstop Diana Parada, who registered her first round-trip of the season with an inside-the-park home run to right field in the bottom of the first inning.
Burr came back in the fourth inning and connected on a two-run double in the fourth and scored on a groundout by Trenicea Cameron.
MVSU’s Kim Spivey (13-11) worked five innings for the complete-game win allowing one hit and striking out four. She now has 122 strikeouts thrown this season.
Game two saw MVSU use 18 hits and six Lady Hornet errors to finish with an 18-4 victory. Burr went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Rachelle Harris, Alex Robertson, Shana Ladner, Trenicea Cameron and Brianna Holmes each had two hits in the game.
MVSU scored four runs in the both the first and second innings before putting up five runs in each the third and fourth innings.
Devyn Pearl (3-4) allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out one in the game.
