Statement from Tony B. Harvey, Texas Southern Head Coach
“I am appreciative of and flattered by the interest shown in me by Eastern Michigan University, however at this time, I am proud and honored to represent Texas Southern University as its head coach. My coaching staff and I are committed to the growth and development of our student athletes, engaging with our alumni constituents, student body, and the City of Houston.”
“I want to thank Dr. John Rudley and athletic director Dr. Charles McClelland for their support during this process. When I came to TSU, I was inspired and motivated to restore our men’s basketball program to become a continuous contender for SWAC Championships, to increase our overall APR and to graduate our young men. I feel that we are doing that and doing so in compliance with our university’s and NCAA’s mission.
I look forward to continuing our efforts to teach, lead and serve at this great institution.” Harvey was named 2011 SWAC Coach of the Year after his team captured the conference regular season title; the program’s first SWAC title in 13 years. His team also earned the program’s first bid to the NIT tournament.
