BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern sophomore Jessica Haynes was named the SWAC Softball Player of the Week, while Mississippi Valley State sophomore Kimberly Spivey was named SWAC Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today.
Haynes (IF, 5-8, So., Houston, Texas) went 5-for-13 (.385) with a double, home run, two RBI and two stolen bases in five games last week. She scored six runs and chipped in a pair of hits with two runs in a win over Southern (SU) on April 1. Haynes added two hits, two runs and two assists in a 6-5 win over SU on April 2, helping the Tigers to the series win over the Jags.
Spivey (P, 5-7, So., Dallas, Texas) finished the week 2-0, pitching 14.0 innings, including two complete games. She opened the week against conference foe Jackson State (JSU), striking out four as the Devilettes held the Tigers scoreless for the 3-0 win. In the second game against JSU, Spivey surrendered just three hits as Mississippi Valley State won 4-1. She struck out five batters in the finale. She finished the week with nine strikeouts and no earned runs for a 0.00 ERA.
