CYPRESS, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women’s basketball team learned their postseason destination on Monday evening as they’ll travel to Waco, Texas to face Baylor University in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ferrell Center.
“I’m excited for the girls as it’s a great experience for our freshmen and we get to send our seniors out the same way they came in by winning the conference tournament and going to the NCAA Tournament,” said first-year head coach Toyelle Wilson. “I’m grateful and blessed for receiving the opportunity by our president and athletic director to coach this team. My players believed in what I told them throughout the year as we achieved the goal we set at the beginning of the season.”
Led by Wilson, the Lady Panthers enter this weekend’s basketball extravaganza seeded 16th while Sunday’s opponent, Baylor University, enters the tournament seeded first in the Dallas Regional. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series 13-0 with the last meeting taking place on Nov. 11, 2007 in Waco during Wilson’s first year as an assistant at Prairie View A&M.
“Baylor was No. 1 for a few weeks this year and they’re coached very well by Coach (Kim) Mulkey,” stated Wilson. “I think they have the most dominant inside player ever in NCAA history in Brittney Griner. We’ve been faced with playing against taller teams this season but the one thing we have going for us is our defense as we rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage defense, 12th in scoring defense and 18th in three-point field goal percentage defense. It may be a game of David vs. Goliath but we’re going to play hard and represent Prairie View A&M and the SWAC with pride,” added Wilson.
Tickets can be purchased at the Ferrell Center or by calling 254-710-1000, 1-800-710-1000, 1-800-BAYLORU (option 7) or logging on at www.baylorbears.com. Every person, regardless of age, must have a ticket to enter the facility.
