PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Sterling Smith’s bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 10th lifted Prairie View A&M to a 3-2 win over Southern on Sunday afternoon. The win gives Prairie View A&M its first series win over Southern since 2007 and first win over SU since 2009.
PV struck first in the fourth as three consecutive singles led to a 1-0 lead as Kyle Bible recorded an RBI. Southern moved ahead in the fifth with two runs but PV managed to knot the game at 2-all in the bottom frame on Giovanni Angel’s RBI double which brought home Colby Hines.
The pitching duel extended into extra frames as Angel drew a leadoff walk to begin the 10th inning. An error by Southern allowed PV’s James Rodriguez to reach base which then turned into a bases-loaded situation as Bible was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Smith drove in the win as his RBI single brought home Angel.
Angel had a strong day at the plate as the senior finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Bible also had two hits and an RBI while Hines logged two hits with a run scored. Senior Ben Blackburn picked up his first win of the year after three innings of scoreless relief.
On Saturday, PV split the doubleheader with SU as the Panthers lost 17-5 before riding Derrick Mitchell’s two-hit performance in game two en route to a 4-2 win.
PV will have a short turnaround as they’ll travel to Houston for a meeting versus Houston Baptist on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
