Baton Rouge, La. – By the conclusion of the 2011 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, a total of 10 meet records had fallen and Grambling’s men and Alabama State’s women had both nearly lapped the field to take home team titles. Alabama State’s Kesia Derilus (track) and Jackson State’s Arteshia Williams (field) earned women’s MOP, while Grambling swept the men’s MOP awards – Darwin Price (track) and Domonick Hemphill (field).
Both the Tigers and the Hornets took the drama out of the team championship races early. Alabama State’s women cruised to 151 team points, compared to 103 for second-place Prairie View A&M. Grambling’s men were even more dominant, outdistancing second-place Jackson State 173.33 to 91.
Women’s Individual Awards – Derilus led the Hornets scoring 29 individual points with a championship and 10 points in the 3,000 meters, plus 8 points in the mile run, 6 points in the 5,000 meters, and 5 points in the 800 meters. Williams scored 20 points for Jackson State earning individual titles in the long jump and triple jump. Alabama State’s Richie Beene took home Coach of the Year honors.
Men’s Individual Awards – Price won three events and finished second in the 5,000 meters for a total of 38 points. He won championships in the 800 meters, 3,000 meters, and set a meet record in the mile. Hemphill was consistent in three field events earning 6 points in the high jump and long jump, and another 4 points in the triple jump. Grambling’s Bertram Lovell was named Coach of the Year.
