Southern University Releases 2011 Football Schedule

southernjaguarsBaton Rouge, LA — Southern University has released the 2011 football schedule that includes three games in NFL stadiums, home games against big rivals, a tough first month of the season and trips to Itta Bena, Miss., Pine Bluff, Ark., Houston, Texas and Montgomery, Ala.

The Southern Jags will open its season in Nashville, Tenn., against Tennessee State (Sept. 3rd) in the John Merritt Classic at LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans.

After that, the Jaguars face Alabama A&M (Sept. 10th) and Jackson State (Sept. 17th) on back-to-back Saturdays, followed by an appearance at the Georgia Dome in the Atlanta Football Classic (Sept. 24th), against an opponent to be announced later.

The month of October will see Southern U. travel to Itta Bena, Miss. (Oct. 1st), to take on the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State, and then will return home to face Prairie View A&M (Oct. 8th).  The Jags will then hit the road to Pine Bluff, Ark. to battle with the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (Oct. 8th), before getting their first open date of the season on October 22nd.  SU will close out the month hosting the Braves of Alcorn State (Oct. 29th).

The final month of the regular season will see the SU Jaguars on the road the first two weeks of November,  facing the defending SWAC Champions, the Texas Southern Tigers in Houston, Texas (Nov. 5th) and the 2010 SWAC runner-up, the Hornets of Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. (Nov. 12th).  After a bye week on November 19th, the Southern Jaguars will take on the Grambling State Tigers in the State Farm Bayou Classic XXXVIII on November 26th, in New Orleans, La.
