The 2010 version of the Mississippi Valley State Devilette volleyball team enters the season with championship potential but carrying the sting of a season unfulfilled.
Last year, the team faced a rebuilding year as head coach Alyse Wells-Kilbert brought in players that she felt could lead thte team back into the conference title race. Returning to the team in 2010 are seven players who all proved that they have the potential to lead the Devilettes’s title campaign. And with three inspiring newcomers joining the fold, expect a serious push from MVSU in the race for the SWAC title. Among the returning players are the 2009 preseason player of the year Maura Moed and 2009 SWAC newcomer of the year Lonnie Hoff. Moed, an all-conference and all-tournament pick last season, was the team leader in attack percentage (.256), kills (293), blocks (108) and points (415). Hoff, The 5‐foot‐8 junior outside hitter from Standard, Alberta, Canada has been a consistent contributor for the Devilettes this season. She posted a 1.93 kills per game average in 2009 and had a season‐high .525 hitting percentage against Alabama State. Hoff was named the SWAC’s Newcomer of the Week twice in 2009. The schedule for the Devilettes opens with a tri-match at Philander Smith with Lane College. The Devilettes then go into tournament play at the Texas Southern Season Opener and the Alabama State Invitational. Home action for the team begins with the MVSU/Jessie Harris Classic on September 24 & 25. The month of October sees MVSU welcome Grambling State, Jackson State, Prairie View A&M, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Alabama A&M to Itta Bena. All roads lead to November 20-21 as Alabama State hosts the 2010 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.
