BIRMINGHAM – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has suspended Alabama A&M women’s basketball player Chelsea Marshall and Jackson State men’s basketball player Phillip Williams one game each for unsportsmanlike conduct. Both Alabama A&M University and Jackson State University have also been fined $500.
Marshall was ejected for fighting in the first half of the Bulldogs’ Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament semifinal game vs. Alabama State last Friday. She will serve her suspension in Alabama A&M’s 2010-2011 season opener.
Williams was ejected for throwing a punch in the second half of the Tigers’ National Invitation Tournament game vs. Mississippi State Tuesday night. Williams will serve his suspension in Jackson State’s 2010-2011 season opener.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference encourages sportsmanship and adherence to all SWAC and NCAA policies. We will continue to enforce these polices to ensure that everyone in our administrative and athletic programs conduct themselves in a manner that brings credit to our member institutions, intercollegiate athletics and the Conference Office.
