Katrich Williams scored a game-high 27 points and Whiquitta Tobar added 13 as #3 seed Alabama A&M held on to defeat #6 seed Alcorn State 66-63 in a women’s quarterfinal game at the Farmers Insurance SWAC Basketball Tournament.
Alabama A&M (16-12) advances to Friday’s noon semifinal vs. #7 seed Alabama State. Alcorn State’s season ends at 8-19.
The Bulldogs led 37-23 at halftime and led by as many as 19 at 49-30 with 12:53 to play. However, Alcorn State chipped away at the lead, cutting the deficit to one at 64-63 on Sharnika Breedlove’s layup with five seconds to play.
A pair of free throws by Alabama A&M’s Dominisha Johnson’s with two seconds to play provided the final margin as Alcorn State’s half-court heave was off the mark.
Kiara Ruffin led Alcorn State with 18 points
