Grambling State pulled off the shocker of the Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament by knocking off the top-seeded Jackson State Tigers 65-57 in a men’s quarterfinal game.
The G-Men (7-20) ended a seven-game losing streak in become the first 8th-seeded men’s team to beat the #1 seed in the SWAC Tournament since Alcorn State beat Mississippi Valley State 67-66 in 2004. GSU will play the Prairie View A&M – Texas Southern winner Friday night.
Jackson State (19-12) had a 13-game winning streak snapped. The Tigers will await their destination in the National Invitation Tournament.
Grambling State took the lead for good, 46-43, on a three-pointer by Donald Qualls with 8:02 to play. After extending to a six-point lead at 53-47 with 3:28 to play, GSU never led by less than four down the stretch.
Qualls led Grambling State with 20 points. Rupert Rose added 13 for the Tigers.
Garrison Johnson led Jackson State with a game-high 27 points. Rod Melvin also scored 12 for JSU.
