Brad Young of Buster Sports is reporting that East Carolina University has contacted Grambling Athletic Director J. Lin Dawson to request permission to interview Rod Broadway for its head football coach position. The position became vacant when Skip Holtz left to become the head coach at the University of South Florida.
This is not the first time Broadway’s name has come up as a candidate for another position while at Grambling as Nick Deriso reported on his blog;
Broadway has flirted with leaving the FCS program at Grambling before, interviewing with Duke and being linked to the coaching search at Florida A&M. He’s not the only coach on ECU’s wish list, however. Other names circulating include Temple’s Al Golden and Middle Tennessee’s Rick Stockstill.
I think things are a little different with the chances of Broadway going to ECU compared to the buzz of him being considered for the Duke job two years ago. He is from North Carolina and was an ECU assistant coach for 2 years (1979-1980). So he is very familiar with the lay of the land. There is also something to be said to the fact that the SWAC doesn’t have a long history of its head coaches being considered for other head coaching position outside the HBCU landscape. The step of leaving the SWAC from the FCS level to a program like ECU in a mid-major conference like Conference USA doesn’t seem so extreme compared to leaving the SWAC to coach in the ACC.
Time will tell.
