MATTESON, Ill.- University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball player Kevin Edwards passed away on Saturday evening in his home state of Illinois after suffering from a fatal car accident. Edwards was a standout pitcher for the Golden Lions last season leading his team in total appearances (13) in 2009.
“Kevin Edwards was a model student and a talented athlete who was progressing toward a bright future,” said UAPB Chancellor Dr. Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. “The University and I are deeply saddened by his transition.”
A native of Matteson, Ill. Edwards was a member of the Golden Lions baseball team the past two years.
“We are deeply saddened with the news of Kevin Edwards passing,” said UAPB Athletic Director Louis “Skip” Perkins Jr. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin and his family during this very difficult time.”
“The Southwestern Athletic Conference would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Kevin’s family,” SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said. ”Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time as they remember him.”
“On behalf of University of Arkansas Pine Bluff baseball team we would like to express our sincere condolences to Kevin’s family,” said UAPB Head Baseball Coach Michael Bumpers. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Kevin was an outstanding young man on and off the field as well as in the classroom. He will be truly missed and never forgotten. We can’t truly express in words the love we have for him and his family. “
Edwards’ funeral arrangements are still pending.
