PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Five players scored in double figures as the Prairie View A&M Panthers defeated Champion Baptist College 101-38 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the William Nicks Building.
Prairie View (3-2) took control early as they held Champion (4-8) to only one field goal en route to a 12-2 lead with 14:49 remaining in the first half. The Panthers blew the game open from that point as they cruised to a 52-17 halftime advantage.
The second half was all Prairie View as 11 of the 12 players who dressed scored three or more points in the rout.
Prairie View’s 101 points marked the second time in two seasons that they eclipsed the 100-point barrier as they scored 106 points against Southwest Assemblies last season. Prior to 2008, the last time Prairie View cracked the century mark occurred on Feb. 8, 2003 in a 104-100 double overtime loss to Texas Southern in Houston.
Freshman Phillip Gates led Prairie View with 16 points while senior forward Darnell Hugee tallied 15 rebounds and 15 points. James Manthe led Champion Baptist with 14 points and three blocks.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 against Texas A&M in an 8 p.m. tip-off at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.
Now lets take it to Texas A&M. Must play a tough consistent inside game and look for their bigs popping out for the deep ball.
