The Prairie View A&M Lady Panther soccer team put forth an impressive performance on Friday afternoon as they defeated Lamar University 2-1 in exhibition action in Prairie View.
After a scoreless first half by both squads, Prairie View jumped out on top 1-0 after Navyd Diaz scored off an assist from Angelica Diaz. Lamar tied the contest at 1-all in the 60th minute but Prairie View’s Jessica Garcia boomed a kick the length of the field to set-up Brenda Castillo’s go-ahead shot.
With only a few days of practice under their belt, second-year head coach Roger Garcia didn’t know what to expect entering Friday’s match-up as he unveiled a freshman-heavy lineup.
“We put forth a solid effort on the field,” he said. “Most of my players are still learning their roles and trying to get accustomed to each other. The heat played a big part on both sides this afternoon but it felt good to get the win and build confidence entering the season.”
Prairie View returns to action on Friday, Aug. 21 with its final exhibition match-up versus Cedar Valley at 7 p.m. in Prairie View.
