Southern defeated Grambling State 5-2 in Game 8 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
The Jaguars (27-14) advance to face the Jackson State-Grambling State winner at 6 p.m. Friday. Grambling (15-36) and Jackson State will square off at Noon Friday in an elimination game.
Southern never trailed in the game. They took the lead in the fourth on Greg Whitfield hit a RBI single and added a run in the fifth on Frazier Hall’s RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead.
Leading 2-1, the Jaguars added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning in defeating Grambling for the fifth time in six meetings this season.
Jarrett Maloy went the distance, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Grambling State scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Sam Keller and added a run in the ninth on an error.
