Jackson State combined for 16 runs in the final six innings to beat
Alabama A&M 17-7 in an elimination game in the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
Trailing 6-3, the Tigers (35-20) scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Jackson State had five hits in the inning and, aided by two Bulldog errors, took a 10-6 lead. Jamaal Thelwell’s hit a two-run homer, and Fred Atkins and Jerome Tyes had RBI singles in the inning.
JSU added three runs in the sixth on bases-clearing double by Willie Wesley. Jerome Tyes had three hits to lead the 14-hit attack of the Tigers, who will play the Southern-Grambling State loser Friday at noon.
Alabama A&M (14-31) came out swinging, scoring five in the first inning and one in the second to lead 6-1. However, the Bulldogs only had two hits in the final seven innings.
