BIRMINGHAM – The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2009 All-Conference Baseball Honors, headlined by Texas Southern’s David Arrendondo voted Player of the Year and Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Justin Moring voted Pitcher of the Year.
All honors were voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information departments.
Arrendondo, a 6-0, 190-pound senior from Houston, TX, was second in the Conference in hitting with a .416 average. He tied for the conference lead in hits with 62 and tied for second with 52 RBI. He led the league with a .500 average with two outs and led the league in average with runners in scoring position, batting .506. The multi-talented senior third baseman/pitcher also posted a 4-5 record on the mound with one save in 14 appearances, and tied for second in the league with 67 strikeouts.
Moring, a 6-2, 210-pound senior from Pine Bluff, AR, had an 8-2 record with a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts. He threw six complete games with one shutout and was fourth in the league in strikeouts with 66. His win total tied for second in the Conference, and his ERA ranked third among all pitchers with at least five starts.
Additionally, Southern’s Victor Franklin was voted Hitter of the Year, Eduardo Gonzalez of Alcorn State earned Freshman of the Year Honors, and Jackson State’s Marvin J. McWhorter was named Newcomer of the Year.
Franklin, a 6-3, 205 senior from Houston, was second in the league in home runs (10), third in slugging percentage (.672) seventh in total bases (84) and eighth in RBI (43). He was third on the team with a .360 batting average.
Gonzalez, a 6-3 product from nearby Tampa, FL, led the SWAC with a .419 average with three home runs, 36 RBI and a .561 slugging percentage. He tied for the league lead in hits and tied for eighth in total bases (83).
McWhorter, a 6-1, 215-pound outfielder from Blue Springs, MS, batted .362 while tying for fourth in the league with eight home runs and ranking fourth in the SWAC with 48 RBI. His.672 slugging percentage ranked fourth in the Conference.
Eduardo Gonzalez is not a product from Miami, he came from Lutz, near Tampa.
