2009 SWAC Softball Championship: Updates

Swac Softball LogoHattiesburg, MS – The semifinal rounds have now been set as the top two seeds from each division are still alive heading into Saturday’s action.

Five-time defending champion and the #1 East seed, Mississippi Valley State will square off against the #1 seed from the West, Southern. Both teams are 2-0 in the tournament and will meet each other in the winner’s
bracket final at 12 noon Saturday. The winner advances to Sunday’s Championship Game.

Saturday’s second game will be a Battle of the Lady Tigers as Grambling State and Jackson State meet in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.

At 5:30 p.m., the Mississippi Valley State-Southern loser will face the Grambling State-Jackson winner for the right to advance to Sunday’s Championship Game.

Day 2 Game Recaps are below.

Game #5 – Mississippi Valley Defeats Alcorn State, 3-2
Rashundra Brass and Ta’Niya Wallace each had one hit and one run to help lead Mississippi Valley State past Alcorn State, 3-2. Mississippi Valley continues in the winner’s bracket and will meet Southern University Saturday, April 25 at 12 noon.

Alcorn falls to the loser’s bracket and will meet the winner of the Prairie View A&M/Grambling State game at 5 p.m. today.

Game # 6 – Southern Outlasts Jackson State, 9-8
Victoria Stewart had two runs and two hits to assist Southern in a 9-8 nail biter victory over Jackson State.

With the win, Southern advances to take on Mississippi Valley on Saturday, April 25 at 12 noon.

Jackson State will face the winner of the Alabama State/Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the loser’s bracket at 5 p.m. today.

Game #7 – Grambling State Defeats Prairie View A&M, 5-1 Denean Woods had two hits and two runs while Latrice Wood added two hits and two RBI’s to help lift Grambling State to a 5-1 win over Prairie View A&M. With the win, Grambling moves on to meet Alcorn State in the loser’s
bracket this evening. With the loss, Prairie View A&M is eliminated from the tournament.

Game #8 – Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Beats Alabama State 7-4 Valerie Higareda and Lacy Kerr each had two hits, one run, and an RBI to guide Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 7-4 win over Alabama State. The Lady Lions will advance in the tournament to take on Jackson State this evening.
The Lady Hornets are eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

Game #9 – Grambling State Soars Past Alcorn State, 6-0
Denean Woods tallied two hits and a run as the Lady Tigers of Grambling State cruised to a 6-0 victory over Alcorn State. The win places Grambling State in the semifinals where it will meet Jackson State. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. With the loss Alcorn State is eliminated from the tournament.

Game #10 – Jackson State Gets 8-3 Victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Jackson State registered 14 hits, led by Wendi Reed’s three to advance ast Arkansas-Pine Blff 8-3 and into the semifinals. The Lady Tigers will square off against Grambling State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.
The loss eliminated Arkansas-Pine Bluff from the ournament.

Day 3 Game Recaps:

Game #11 – Mississippi Valley State Excels Past Southern, 14-7. Angelia Jones and Ta’Niya Wallace both hit home runs as Missisippi Valley soared past Southern, 14-7 and into tomorrow’s Championship Game.

The Devilettes will contend for their sixth consecutive championship title. Game time is set for 12 noon.

The Lady Jaguars will have to face the winner of the Grambling State-Jackson State game this afternoon to vie for a spot in tomorrow’s title game.

Game #12 – Jackson State Defeats Grambling State, 5-3

Carsheena Blanks and Alla Williams nabbed two hits a piece as Jackson State prevailed past Grambling 5-3 to stay alive in the tournament.

The Lady Tigers will battle it out with Southern this evening at 5:30 p.m. for a spot in the title game tomorrow.

With the loss Grambling is eliminated from the tournament.

Game #13 – Southern Edges Jackson State, 7-6

Southern totaled 14 hits to advance past Jackson State 7-6 and solidify a
spot in the 2009 SWAC Championship Game.

Southern will meet Mississippi Valley State in the title game at 12 noon on Sunday, April 26. It will be the fifth time in the last six years the two teams have met in the Championship game.

With the loss, Jackson State is eliminated from the tournament.
