ALEXANDRIA, LA – Jackson State’s women’s golf team claimed its fifth straight Conference title, while Alabama State maintain its lead in men’s competition in the 2009 SWAC Golf Championships at Links on the Bayou Golf Course.
The Lady Tigers ran away from the field on Tuesday, firing a team low-round 316 to finish with a 642 total in the 36-hole competition to claim its 12th SWAC title. Alabama State finished second while Prairie View A&M came in third.
Jennifer Sells was the low medalist, shooting back-to-back 77s to finished with 154, three shots ahead of teammate Mireille LeBlanc (81-76 = 157). Alabama State’s Danielle Robinson finished third (79-83=162).
On the men’s side, Alabama State increased its lead to 11 shots after shooting a team low-round 294, bettering its Monday team score by one stroke. The Hornets’ 589 total places them ahead of second-place Jackson State (600) and third-place Texas Southern (620).
Jackson State’s Brett Benson had the low round of the day, firing a tournament-low 69 (*35-34), with an eagle on the Par 5 15th in addition to three birdies and two bogeys on his round.
Men’s final round play begins Wednesday at 8 a.m. Following competition, team and individual honors will be presented to both the Women’s and Men’s Champions.
